Philippine Folklore
When you want to experience the life of the locals, public market is the place to go. When you want to have vacation in Cebu, I want you to spend more time in a gorgeous hotel with cocktail in hand. On the other hand, I want you to see the local side as well. I think, most attractive part of Cebu is that you can experience these two extremes.
I’d like to focus on the “local” lifestyle, especially the public markets.
Often times, guidebooks says “Public Market = Carbon”, considering the public safety and the distance, it is undeniable inconvenient. There are many public markets other than Carbon.
In Public Market, most daily products are repacked and sold. I was surprised to see that even cooking oil, ketchup, vinegar, salt etc… are repacked.
Mandaue Public Market, is often I went to. It is located close to the intersection of highway and A.S Fortuna. This market is smaller than Carbon Market, but walking around is easy. If you go to the market around 7AM or 3:30PM, you can even find many fresh fish, which can even be prepared as Sashimi. When you are going to buy fish for Sashimi, as personal responsibility, I suggest taking experienced person to guide you.

During sunny early afternoon, fresh meat is sold at the storefront of the meat shop. Pig’s face, chicken head and other frightening parts are displayed among other parts as usual. Oh my, is this ok? It must be rotten? These are the questions pops in my head about sanitary issues, but these meats was freshly butchered either behind the store or inside the store. These meats are fresh and tasty, because it was not processed in various stages similar to Japan. You might be little shocked but it’s surely delicious.
When you’re an expert, you can enjoy dining in local food stand. Enjoy the localness to the maximum. Just make sure, it is well-cooked. Please make your own judgment, it might be trouble to the stomach if you just experienced it for the first time.
If you’re a first timer, I suggest avoid purchasing ready to eat fruits especially if you have sensitive stomach. Let’s try the delicious fruits with local price.
*I suggest, go to public markets in day light and bring only necessary things and dress in casual clothes. There are possible snatchers and exposure to trouble, please go at your risk.
